Lake Shore CSD Implements New Student Device Policy as Part of Statewide Distraction-Free Mandate

Lake Shore Central School District has implemented a new policy regarding student use of internet-enabled devices—such as smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches—during the school day. This change comes as part of New York State’s Distraction-Free Schools initiative, a statewide mandate announced by Governor Kathy Hochul to help create safer, healthier, and more focused learning environments. The new policy was adopted by the Board of Education on July 21 and can be found here: Policy #7316 – Use of Internet Enabled Devices During the School Day.
What This Means for Families:
Beginning with the 2025–26 school year, students will be expected to keep personal internet-enabled devices turned off and stored away during the school day unless explicitly permitted by a teacher or school staff for educational purposes. Devices may only be used under supervision and in accordance with classroom learning objectives.
Key points include:
-
Unauthorized use of phones or other internet-enabled devices during class time is prohibited.
-
Devices must be stored securely in lockers, backpacks, or another designated area during the school day unless being used for instructional purposes.
-
Exceptions will be made for medical reasons, safety concerns, and accommodations outlined in a student’s IEP or 504 Plan.
-
Devices may not be used in hallways, restrooms, or other non-instructional areas unless permitted by school staff.
Lake Shore CSD understands the critical role that technology plays in today’s world, but also recognizes that unregulated use during the school day can hinder learning, social interaction, and mental well-being. Exceptions will be made for medical needs and approved accommodations outlined in a student’s IEP or 504 Plan.
How You Can Support:
We encourage families to speak with their children about this new mandate and help reinforce responsible device habits at home. If you have questions about how the policy will be implemented at your child’s school, please contact your building principal.
