Spanish 4 Honors Brings Language Learning to the Kitchen

Learning Spanish Through Food and Culture
This week, Lake Shore High School’s Spanish 4 Honors students took their learning beyond the classroom and into the kitchen. Over two days, classes met in the Home Economics room to prepare traditional foods while working entirely in Spanish.
Students made arepas, agua fresca, and arroz con leche, using written recipes in Spanish and communicating throughout the cooking process in the target language. The activity blended reading, writing, speaking, and listening with practical culinary skills, reinforcing language learning in an authentic, hands on way.
Real World Language in Action
Experiences like this help students move from studying a language to actively using it. Following recipes, giving instructions, and collaborating in Spanish required focus, teamwork, and confidence. It also offered students a meaningful connection to culture, showing how language lives beyond textbooks and classrooms.
A Taste of Experiential Learning
The project was a clear example of experiential learning at work. Students were engaged, motivated, and proud of what they created. The results were impressive both linguistically and culinarily.
Photos from the activity will be shared on district social media and other communication channels to highlight the creative learning happening every day at Lake Shore High School.
We commend our Spanish 4 Honors students for their enthusiasm and strong language skills, and we thank their teacher for creating an experience that made learning memorable and meaningful.
