Hooping for Literacy: 5th Grade Tournament Celebrates Athletics and Academics
The spirit of competition and the love of reading converged on March 4th for the annual “Hooping for Literacy” 3v3 Basketball Tournament. This district-wide event brought together the top fifth-grade teams from each elementary building, with every squad proudly representing their school after winning their respective building-level tournaments.
More than just a display of athletic talent, the event serves as a bridge between the gym and the library. The Lake Shore Teachers’ Association (LSCTA) generously donated $150.00 to each elementary school library specifically for the purchase of sports-themed books, ensuring that the excitement of the tournament inspires students to keep turning pages.
Co-coordinators Michele Hornberger and Evan Koehler have spearheaded the tournament for four years, establishing a tradition that ties athletics to the importance of literacy. The Physical Education department and district leadership—including Mr. Johnson, Mrs. Bergler, and Mr. Perry—look forward to this great event every spring.
Congratulations to all of our fifth-grade student-athletes for their hard work on the court and their commitment to excellence in the classroom!
