AJS Read-A-Thon Smashes Records: $3,057 Raised for Student Literacy

AJS Students Smash Records at 9th Annual Read-A-Thon
ANGOLA, NY — The gymnasium at A.J. Schmidt Elementary was transformed into a sanctuary for readers on March 12, as 89 students gathered for the 9th Annual Read-A-Thon, ultimately shattering previous fundraising records to support student literacy.
This year’s event was a record-breaking success, with student-athletes of the written word raising a total of $3,057. These funds are used for a vital mission: ensuring every student at A.J. Schmidt receives a brand-new book to keep for their birthday, as well as additional titles to encourage reading throughout the summer months. By the end of the year, this single afternoon of effort will put over 1,280 books directly into the hands of our students.
Community-Powered Literacy
The Read-A-Thon is a true "One Lake Shore" effort. Students collected pledges from family, friends, and neighbors—either as flat donations or per-page commitments. While the focus remained on the books, the atmosphere was festive, featuring crafts and snacks donated by local favorites Pat’s Pizzeria and Wegmans.
The record total was pushed over the top by a significant donation from Everhaunt Haunted House. This corporate support, combined with the hard work of our students and the dedication of faculty and staff, ensures that the AJS library collection in every student's home continues to grow.
