Lake Shore Students Take the Controls at WNY Construction Career Day

ANGOLA, NY – Twenty-eight Lake Shore High School students drove and ran heavy equipment on Sept. 30 at WNY Construction Career Day, learning one-on-one from people who work in the trades.
The yearly event is held at the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 17 in Lakeview. It draws hundreds of students from schools across the area. Lake Shore Central School District students from Angola, Evans, Brant and Derby left the High School after second period and were back by 1 p.m.
Students did more than watch. Each one got behind the controls of real heavy equipment, with an expert in the field right beside them, coaching them through every step.
Learning From the Pros
The trip was organized by Lake Shore High School Counselor Vanessa Manney. Students came back excited to share what they had done. Days like this let students try the work for themselves before they choose a path after high school.
Thank you to IUOE Local 17 and the operators who spent the day teaching our students.
