From Mentorship to Leadership: Middle School L.I.T. Students Take the Lead on Prevention

At Lake Shore, we believe in empowering our students to be the "helpers" in our community. This May, our Middle School Leaders in Training (L.I.T.) are putting that mission into action through a series of collaborative events focused on leadership, character, and health advocacy.
🤝 Mentorship in Action: May 18
The series kicks off on Monday, May 18, as L.I.T. students visit Lake Shore Senior High School. In a unique cross-building collaboration, they will join Ms. Schaller’s Health class and work alongside Prevention Specialist Hillary Worthington and the New York National Guard Counterdrug Task Force.
During this workshop, students will finalize the development of a "Vaping Risk Awareness" game show—a project designed by students, for students, to promote healthy lifestyles.
🏆 Celebrating Character: May 20
On Wednesday, May 20, the focus shifts to Lake Shore Middle School for our annual Citizenship Banquet (5:00 PM – 7:00 PM). We are honored to welcome Superintendent Phil Johnson as our keynote speaker to celebrate our Citizens of the Month.
We will also recognize three outstanding community "helpers" for their dedication to our students:
-
Nicole Phillips (Lake Shore Family Support Center)
-
Cindy Latimore (Former School Board Member)
-
John Mills (Erie County Legislator)
🎤 Student-Led Advocacy: May 28
The month culminates in the Vaping Risk Awareness Game Show on May 28. Transitioning from learners to leaders, the L.I.T. students will facilitate this interactive program for their peers during an after-school event, proving that the most powerful messages often come from student voices.
Thank you to our staff, the CRC Coalition, and our community partners for investing in the next generation of Lake Shore leaders.
