J.T. Waugh Elementary Celebrates Literacy Week with Reading Challenges and Community Spirit

ANGOLA, NY – The hallways of J.T. Waugh Elementary have been transformed into a hub of literary excitement this week as students and staff celebrate the school’s annual Literacy Week. Running from March 16 through March 20, the week is packed with interactive challenges and community events designed to foster a lifelong love of reading.
A central highlight of the week is the "Scoop Up a Good Book" reading challenge. For every 20 minutes a student spends reading at home, they earn a "scoop" on their personal bookmark. Once a bookmark is complete, students are entered into a grand prize drawing for Dairy Queen gift cards. To visualize their progress, students add their names to "sprinkles" on a festive ice cream-themed display outside the main office.
The week kicked off on Monday with "Waugh Reads," a school-wide initiative where students and staff alike paused their daily schedules for ten minutes of silent reading. The sight of students lined up along the hallways, fully immersed in books while dressed in comfortable attire, set a focused and positive tone for the days to follow.
The excitement continues today, March 17, with the annual Shamrock Run. Despite the chilly March temperatures, students and their families are gathered along High Street to participate in the race, which concludes with festive photos and green beads in the school auditorium.
The week's festivities will round out with a building-wide BINGO event on Thursday and the final collection of reading challenge bookmarks on Friday.
The Literacy Week events at J.T. Waugh serve as a reminder of the school's commitment to student engagement and the community's support in encouraging academic growth through fun, shared experiences.
