Seneca Language Students Master the Art of Maple Sugaring at Gakwi:yo:h Farms

A Sweet Lesson in Tradition
Published March 18, 2026 • Angola, NY
Tradition and science came together this week as Seneca Language students from Lake Shore Senior High School and Silver Creek High School visited Gakwi:yo:h Farms for an immersive maple sugaring experience.
The "Full Court Press" on learning began with the science of sap collection. Although a recent cold snap kept the sap from running during the visit, students adapted quickly. Using previously boiled-down syrup, they mastered the delicate process of transforming liquid gold into maple sugar.
"This experience allowed our students to connect with the land and their culture in a meaningful way."
— Stacey Purpera, Title VI Coordinator
Beyond the boiling point, the day emphasized community pride and stewardship. Students practiced their Seneca language skills while learning what it means to be good caretakers of our natural landscape. The visit concluded with a hearty pancake breakfast shared among peers, and every student headed home with a jar of maple sugar they helped create. Nya:weh to the Gakwi:yo:h Farm staff for their incredible hospitality!
